Well ive heard that people with hazel eyes are supposed to put light pink as the main color, than brown (i guess any color brown) in the creese and then a kinda natural extremely light yellow/tannish type color for the upper part (the part that goes up to the eyebrow)

I suggest using complimentary colors for your eye color, which would be things like pinks, blues, purples. You get the idea. But just don't go overboard bright - then it looks a little trashy! :) Also, you should try using more than one color at once. What I mean is, have one eyeshadow for the lid, then take another eyeshadow a few shades darker and use it in the crease. I love doing that :D
Purples look really good with hazel eyes, but you have to play around with how you apply the colors for the most ';pop'; without the ';oy! too much'; factor.
I have hazel eyes and for me i use grey, blue, green, maybe some light brown? VERY CUTE!
i suggest you look at fashion magazines. like vogue, glamour..just to give you ideas... good luck
